Student survey

What is the neaco student survey?

To enable evaluation of the Take Your Place programme , we require all target students in years 9-13 to complete a baseline survey during September 2017. This survey has been created by the nationally appointed evaluators and should take no more than 10 minutes to complete. The survey asks about knowledge and attitudes towards HE, as well as plans for the future. The survey also provides neaco with essential data to enable student outcomes to be tracked.

In conjunction with the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education and the Behavioural Insights Team, neaco will also be running a Randomised Control Trial as part of the project. This will involve randomly selecting Year 11 and 13 students who choose to participate to receive a series of text messages, intended to ‘nudge’ them towards making better informed and positive decisions. As part of this we will request mobile phone numbers from year 11 and 13 students. This is completely optional and will not affect their participation in the wider project.

What does my school need to do?

The survey can be either completed on paper or electronically (through PC, tablet or smartphone). Wherever possible it is strongly recommended that students complete it electronically.

By circulating the baseline survey to target students by Monday 25 September 2017, your school will receive £500, plus an additional £3 for every target student’s survey completed online and £2 for every target student’s survey completed on paper.

As part of the neaco project, your school has been allocated a Higher Education Champion (HEC) who can advise further and help you disseminate the survey.

There are three ways that the survey can be delivered:

  1. In-class - Teachers or HECs can run sessions with a group of students in-class or in registration periods. Online surveys can be completed in IT facilities if available, or using smartphones via a survey link sent to students’ email / displayed at the front of the class. This is our favoured approach.

  2.  Out-of-class - Your HEC can run a sign-up session, requesting students to come along during their own time to complete the survey.

  3. Out-of-school - This option involves schools sending a link to the online  survey via email to students, or by distributing the paper survey.

What will my school receive?

All schools which sign up to take part in neaco receive £500 per quarter to contribute towards any costs they incur.

In addition, if you circulate the survey to target students by Monday 25 September 2017, your school will receive £500, plus an additional £3 for every target student’s survey completed online and £2 for every target student’s survey completed on paper.

On request, neaco can also provide summary analysis of survey responses with comparative statistics to East Anglian schools.
