Find out about Apprenticeships - for parents and carers

Our Parent and Carer Ambassador Sophie gives a 60 second introduction to apprenticeships

The basics: What are apprenticeships?

  • Apprenticeships are open to young people aged 16 or above
  • They are jobs where apprentices can earn money while they work and learn industry skills
  • In general. apprentices will spend 80% of their time working, and 20% learning though a training provider
  • There are opportunities available in a wide range of sectors, and apprentices can work towards a degree in some industries.

The basics: the different levels of apprenticeships

As you can see, there are 6 levels of apprenticeships and they are just as valuable as other qualifications, with Level 6 and 7 leading to degree level.

This is not a ladder, and apprentices do not need to work all the way up to Level 7. they an also hop between the levels depending on the career path they choose.

The basics: The Apprenticeship Triangle

For an apprenticeship to operate there needs to be these three different pieces in place:-

1. The employer is the company the apprentice works for

2. The training provider might be a college or university , and organises the training and assessments for the apprenticeship.

3. Finally, the apprentice, who must fulfil the job description for the employer, as well as meeting the apprenticeship standards through training and assessments.
